ROCKING ON A BOAT ist ein schaukelndes, postkapitalistisches Märchen vom nach Hause kommen. Wir hören einen Chor, der uns mit hypnotischen, bilateralen Klängen an eine Strandszene entführt.
Mal stolpernd, mal tänzelnd bewegt sich unsere Protagonistin in Richtung Land, noch auf der Suche nach festem Boden unter den Füßen. Jeder Schritt erzählt von einer langen, beschwerlichen Reise, doch dann setzt der kraftvoll fließende Beat ein und treibt sie weiter: „I became the moon // yeah I am the moon now // and the moon light, too // cause that is the way I will find you soon.“
Songwriterin Barbara Cuesta, selbst Enkeltochter spanischer Gastarbeiter:innen, erzählt auf die für sie typische, eigensinnige Art die Geschichte von Migrant:innen: Von Menschen, in deren Heimat es keine lebensfreundlichen Bedingungen mehr für sie gab und die sich deshalb auf den Weg gemacht haben mit dem Ziel, ein besseres Leben zu finden. Der Preis, den sie zahlen, ist ein ständiges Gefühl von entwurzelt sein; man findet die eigenen Arme und Beine oft nicht mehr wieder. Der Boden scheint selbst an Land noch eine Weile zu schwanken.
Und doch ist unsere Heldin voller Hoffnung: Die Tarotkarten und Glücksplanet Jupiter helfen ihr, den Generationenfluch, nicht ankommen zu können, zu brechen: „So I pulled a card and the card said // Why don‘t you trust your own damn gut // I said I am still on a rocking boat // no you‘re not, no you‘re not.“
Schwebenden Streicher, schwere Moog-Bässe und theatralische Chöre tragen die Zuhörenden durch eine emotional geladene Reise. Am Ende sind auch wir angekommen in der Welt von Euforia. So ist das kommende Album von Cuesta betitelt. Zusammen mit Co-Produzentin und Arrangeurin Zeina Azouqah hat sie einen genreübergreifenden Popsong geschaffen, der an die melancholischen Stücke der Cantautora Lhasa de Sela erinnert oder an Tori Amos‘ „From the Choirgirl Hotel“.
